Marta Syrko uses her work to reveal the deep impacts of war. Through her latest series, Sculpture Soldiers, Syrko sheds light on the profound toll of conflict on both personal and societal levels. Inspired by the intergenerational traumas of her country and the devastation brought by Russia’s full-scale invasion, she captures the resilience and vulnerability of Ukrainian veterans. Living in Lviv, often under attack, Syrko’s own experiences of war are woven into her work, creating intimate portraits that honor her heroes and reflect on healing amid unimaginable challenges.

“In the months before the Russian invasion, I was working with athletes. When the photographs were exhibited, people would ask, ‘Is this a real person or a sculpture?’ That question stayed with me. So I can say that many different paths led me to the Sculpture Series — it didn’t simply come out of nowhere.”
The Sculpture Series is an ongoing project that Marta intends to continue until the end of the war. Through portraits of Ukrainian veterans, she reflects on physical and psychological trauma while looking toward a future of greater accessibility, acceptance, and inclusion.
For Marta, the project is a form of healing — for the soldiers, their families, the country, and herself. Using natural light, water, ice, mirrors, and glass, she creates vivid, often ethereal portraits that reveal both vulnerability and resilience.
Selected photographs from Sculpture series are available as limited fine art prints.
